We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy House Move!

If you are planning to move-house during the Christmas period, there is no doubt that you are going to find it a little more demanding at this time of the year. So, if you have got a house-move plan for the festive season, here are six tips to not let you forget that it is the most wonderful time of the year!

1.       Be prepared for the bad weather

Undoubtedly, the unpredictable weather is going to be one of the biggest pains while moving to a new house over Christmas. To avoid frustrations, make sure you have salt or grit and snow shovels handy to clear roads and pathways. The last thing you want is the removal men to slip as they are carrying your precious and fragile possessions. Torches will also be useful, or of course your iPhone torch, as it will be getting dark a lot earlier and you may still be moving things after dark. Make sure to also pack a de-icer in case driving conditions become difficult.

2.       Contact your surveyors

Once you have found your ideal property, ensure that you find a reliable surveyor before you commit to a purchase.  For example, if the boiler is not working and you have already moved in, you may be left with the responsibility of having to replace an expensive boiler, especially during Christmas.

3.       Write Christmas cards early

Writing and sending off Christmas cards can be very time consuming and therefore you should write them in plenty of time including your new address pre-printed inside. The same applies to your Christmas shopping, make sure you do this early too to avoid last minute stresses and the crowds! It is also good to inform utility companies that you are moving and have all mail forwarded to your new address once you have exchanged contracts.

4.       Pack a special Christmas box for essentials

With the weather being so cold, it will be useful to set aside some essentials such as warm clothes, towels, toiletries or even tea bags and a kettle. Pack some mince pies too to maintain that Christmas spirit.

5.       Prepare your children for moving house.

The build up to Christmas is often a very joyous time for kids and this does not want to be dampened by the potential stresses of a house move. Ensure that you pack advent calendars, stocking presents and treats in the essential Christmas box so you can access it immediately when they arrive in their new home.

6.       Festive decorations

Once you have moved in, and you are in the stages of turning your house into a home, putting up some Christmas decorations will definitely cheer the place up and add a touch of festive spirit. If you have kids, they will love getting involved in this, helping them to get settled in even quicker. It will be an ideal time to relax, put your feet up, have some mulled wine, eat some (or lots of) mince pies, play games and watch the Christmas lights dance around the room… nothing will get you more in the Christmas mood then realising you have done it… you’ve moved at Christmas!
